Endodontic treatments are the best solution to preserve severely damaged teeth. Dentists use this treatment alternative to prevent infections and ease the pain caused by dental pulp damage.
The dental pulp resides within the tooth's interior. This soft tissue contains micro-blood vessels and nerves. Therefore, it is responsible for any sensitivity the tooth might have. Unfortunately, the pulp is highly vulnerable and swells in the presence of harmful stimuli.
When the pulp damage is severe, the dentist has to remove it using endodontic files and fill the tooth with gutta-percha.
Endodontic files are special appliances that the dentist uses to remove the dental pulp and shape the interior of the root canal.
These appliances are long and thin and look similar to a screw. They also have a small plastic handle at the top. The dentist can use this handle to hold and activate the files inside the root canal.
The active part of endodontic files is usually made of stainless steel or a nickel-titanium alloy. However, they are not rigid but flexible. This way, the dentist can curve them the same way as the root canal curves.
Endodontic files have different lengths and diameters. This way, the dentist can progressively enlarge the root canal.
Lastly, endodontic files can be sterilized in the autoclave. This helps reduce the risks of infections to a minimum.
Endodontic files work quite simply. Introducing the file inside the root canal and rotating it with the hand is more than sufficient to start working. This torque motion causes the blades in the file to cut and wear down the canal's interior. Therefore, giving it a round and even shape.
Yet, the dentist must make sure to press the file against each wall of the canal. This ensures that every area of the canal system is prepared.
Endodontic files can be divided into different groups, such as:
● Extirpating files:
These files are also called barbed broach files. Their only function is to grab the dental pulp and remove it from the root canal. It possesses tiny sharp needles that latch into the pulp. Therefore, making it easier to remove.
● Enlarging files:
These are the regular files used to shape and enlarge the canals. They come in sequential order, each file having a wider diameter than the previous one. The dentist always begins the root canal treatment with a short diameter file. Once he finishes preparing the canal with this initial file, the dentist switches to the next file in the set.
Nowadays, there are special files that can be placed on a motor கைத்தறி. This makes the process easier and faster as the handpiece torque prepares the canal more efficiently.
